GERMAN CONCENTRATES ON THE THIRD ISLAND, A film by José Vieira Mendes
During the First World War, after Germany declared war on Portugal, on March 9, 1916, more than a thousand Germans and Austrians (aged between 16 and 45) who lived in Portugal, and the crews of ships moored at Portuguese and then colonies ports, were taken hostage.
Most of the prisoners with double nationality, Portuguese and German, were sent to Terceira Island in Azores, to the Fort of São João Baptista in Angra do Heroísmo, where 10 years before, Gungunhana had died.
However, despite all the circumstances, it was a very different experience from the German concentration camps during the Second World War. In today’s world, it can even be considered an experience of great tolerance and understanding from the Portuguese political and military institutions of the 1st Republic, as well as from the population and society of Terceira Island. That’s why, instead of being called prisoners, these people were called ‘concentrates’.
The purpose of this documentary is to make known to a wider audience, an episode of the history of the Azores and Terceira Island, practically unknown and not described in any school manual about the History of Portugal.
